The town/city is the governmental center of county of Liberty County. Nearby Fort Stewart and the principal town/city of Hinesville are part of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart urbane statistical area, which comprises all of Liberty County and neighboring Long County.
That same year, the seat of Liberty County was transferred to Hinesville from Riceboro.
It was incorporated as a town/city in 1916. The town/city is titled for Charleton Hines, a state senator. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has an region of 16.3 square miles (42 km2), of which 16.2 square miles (42 km2) is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.61%) is water.
