That same year, the seat of Liberty County was transferred to Hinesville from Riceboro.

It was incorporated as a town/city in 1916. The town/city is titled for Charleton Hines, a state senator. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has an region of 16.3 square miles (42 km2), of which 16.2 square miles (42 km2) is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.61%) is water.
